Graduation with Distinction

Biology majors who achieve excellence in both their studies and a research-based thesis may apply for Graduation with Distinction in Biology. Students may apply if they have a grade point average of 3. The award of Distinction requires the maintenance of this grade point average through graduation. Graduation with Distinction also requires the completion of an original research project, usually carried out as an independent study in biology e. However, the Distinction project may be completed without a formal enrollment in independent study. The research project must have a primary disciplinary focus and research question in the biological sciences, even in the case of interdisciplinary research. Projects that are related to Biology, but not primarily focused in the discipline, may be eligible as the basis of a thesis written for Graduation with Distinction Outside the Major.

Sign up here to learn more about upcoming events. Presented by the College Office, this event provides a showcase of the many different major Departments and Programs at Penn. Faculty and student representatives from the Department provide information on what students can expect from the Penn Biology program and how best to prepare to declare the major. The URM Fall Networking Mixer provides and opportunity for underrepresented and minority students to engage with current Penn undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs in a casual setting to learn more about life and research at Penn at all levels.

Dinner is provided. The Career Series Presentation introduces students to organizations external to Penn to help them begin to learn more about professional options outside of academia and medicine.

A biology major studies living organisms’ functions and characteristics. You’ll take math, science, chemistry and biology courses.

Biology is life, literally, so those who study biology embrace life like no one else. We are vivacious and vibrant people, energetic like mitochondria. Biology majors will bring a new light to your life when they give you their anatomically correct heart. Biology majors are like dogs. Although dogs are all of the same species, Canis lupus familiaris , each breed is unique.

Biology majors are all human, but we come in all flavors. You may never meet a more diverse group of people. Speaking of dogs, biology majors can handle any pet, even the gross and weird ones. Stinky ferret? No problem. Slimy amphibian? Spooky snake? Creepy tarantula? No pet of yours could ever scare off a biology major!

Our biological sciences major options are designed to guide students through difficult subject matter to cultivate a deeper understanding of the complex structures and processes of the natural world. We offer undergraduate studies in specialized areas such as ecology and biodiversity, molecular biology and cognitive neuroscience in addition to general majors in biological sciences or integrated sciences. In our graduate programs, students conduct original research in areas of cell and molecular biology, or ecology and evolution.

Research is built on a spirit of collaboration between leading faculty investigators, graduate students and undergraduates. Pods of researchers reach across disciplines to work with various departments on campus in an attempt to solve challenges in environmental sciences, sustainability, disease research and health disparities. DU is home to a renowned faculty of chemists, biologists and physicists working in the field of biophysics.

My girlfriend is a biologist whom I love very much, but we’re both entirely unsure of degree by doing research and also is interested in conservation biology.

For those who don’t know, “cuffing season” is when people who are normally single during the warmer months get into serious relationships during the cooler months, to put it simply. So, to increase the chances of my hopelessly single self being “cuffed,” here are five reasons you should date a Biology major. Dead things. Bodily fluids. Nothing grosses them out, in fact, most gross things intrigue them.

So, if you have a cool gross story or a bodily injury, a bio major would LOVE to hear about it. Us bio majors would much rather be outside exploring nature or sitting at home watching science documentaries than going out on an expensive night on the town. If you’re looking for a cheap date, look no further. Contrary to popular belief, Biology is NOT a soft science. Our schedules are jammed pack with biology, chemistry, and math.

Kerry Cheesman e-mail: kcheesma capital. A survey of biology departments in led to publication of a de facto curriculum for the training of undergraduate biology majors. Knowledge of the biological sciences has changed considerably since then, and the present study attempts to find out whether or not undergraduate requirements have changed as a result. In fact, little has changed, although the molecular areas of biology are more likely to be required now than they were in In the absence of a national accrediting body for biology, questions remain about whether there needs to be a standardized curriculum and, if so, what it should contain.

This study includes a look at what courses are offered by undergraduate departments, what courses are required for a biology degree, and what content is covered in the introductory course sequence. Suggestions for an updated curriculum are also provided. The biological sciences cover a vast array of disciplines , from molecular biology and biochemistry to ecosystems and environmental biology. In the past 25 years alone, knowledge in the biological arena has mushroomed, particularly in the areas of molecular biology and biotechnology.

Against this backdrop of expanding knowledge comes the increasingly difficult task of training future biologists. Within a four-year undergraduate curriculum, it is impossible to study all of the vast expanse of science we know as biology, so questions arise: What is most important? What should a 21st-century biologist with a bachelor’s degree know?

What skills should he or she have?

The perks(?) of Dating a Biology Major

Because science is a process, not a body of knowledge, we require completion of original research and an associated senior thesis. Through this process students gain essential skills in enquiry, study design, data gathering, data analysis, interpretation of results, scientific writing, and oral communication. In addition, biology majors enjoy access to a wide variety of collaborative research experiences; cutting-edge technologies and facilities; and a highly-accomplished, research-active faculty who are passionate about mentoring students.

STUDENTS: Submit with the Advisement Report and any other major or minor checklists to the Student Services Desk by the due date. See attached for.

A degree in biology opens up many opportunities in the job market as well as post graduate studies. One of the best ways to ensure success is to be prepared. Here are a few ideas of things that are essential for optimum performance in biology courses. Biology classes are full of subject specific vocabulary and science terminology that can be challenging for a new student.

It is important that you are not intimidated by words you may not know. Take time to look up the words or ask your professor. Failure to master your new science language will result in unnecessary stress and difficulty in class. For most biology courses, the supply list includes significantly more than a text book. Many biology courses require a wide array of supplies for lab work. While in lab, you will have use of many supplies paid for through your tuition and dues.

Biology Portfolio Checklist

The Biology major curriculum includes specific goals or learning outcomes that the student will accomplish in completing the Biology degree. The Portfolio Checklist describes the Biology learning outcomes and provides a mechanism for the student and the Academic Advisor to track and document successful completion of those learning outcomes. Each semester, when you meet with your Academic Advisor for pre-registration advising, review your progress on the learning outcomes and update your plan for their successful completion by your anticipated graduation date.
